Fertile Rhythms, 66 in. x 88 in. Acrylic Paint, Yarn, Wood, Fake Flowers, & Canvas
by Robin Hextrum, Scottie Burgess, & Tiffany Matheson 2020
I collaborated with Tiffany Matheson and Scottie Burgess to construct a sculpture for a Pink Progression collaborative exhibition at the McNichols Building in downtown Denver. We decided to create a work of art that would capture the ambivalence of the state of womanhood today. We chose to allude to domesticity and femininity with flowers and domestic craft materials like yarn. The figure is emerging from a binding to reveal that she is gaining freedom, yet a significant portion of her body remains restricted to show the lengths we still have to go to attain true gender parity. Following the exhibition at the McNichols building, we also exhibited this work at a Pink Progression exhibition at Regis University. This sculpture is now on permanent display in the Dayton Memorial Library at Regis University.
